Mesa Shul Welcomes New Torah
On Sunday July 9th, 2023, Mesa Shul had a wonderful and unique experience when Congregation Shir Chadash from Long Beach presented us with a Torah as a gift. Their congregation is merging with another and when they heard via our Board Member Marilyn Simon-Gersuk that we were short a Sefer Torah, they immediately offered us one of theirs. It is a beautiful sefer with clear print and easy to follow. It came with a cover, shield and crowns and also a special cover for the High Holydays.
After the Torah was brought into the building, a board Member of Shir Chadash, Linda Vezzini gave a short talk on their congregation (one very much like ours in terms of demographics) and its history. Mashey Bernstein, Mesa Shul Board President, expressed the thanks of the congregation and invited all to come forward to share the happy moment. When we opened the Torah, we found that it had fortuitously been rolled to the place where we find the prayer for the opening and closing of the Ark (Bamidbar 10: 35). All in attendance joined it singing these well-known phrases. Jacob Bastomski, former President, lifted the scroll for Hagbah and opened the Torah for a full nine columns turning around several times so that all could see the Torah. He noted its lightness and sturdiness. We look forward to beginning reading from it on Shabbat Beresheet.
